It may seem a bit strange that I'm telling you this when we sell a diet. The thing is though, it's not really a diet at all.
When I first wrote Optimum Nutrition I didn't write the word 'diet' once in the whole book. The reason we decided to call it the 'Optimum Nutrition Diet' was because without the calling it a diet, nobody would know what is was at first glance, which wouldn't be good for business.
I do slightly regret this decision know, because I knew back then that diets don't work, but Optimum Nutrition isn't a diet, it's a lifestyle.
Some people have asked, how they should eat after they have lost the weight they wanted to. The answer is; exactly the same. you may find you can relax certain aspects if you're not trying to lose weight, but the principles (intermittent/controlled fasting, low GI, lower carb) remain the same. These principles are not just about fat loss, they are important for health as well.
Brian Wansink, author of Mindless Eating said "The best diet, is the one you don't know you are on", and it's true. Diets make you feel like you are depriving yourself of things, whereas a lifestyle is just what you do.
Diet comes from an old Latin word 'diaeta', meaning 'prescribed way of life', and that is exactly what it should be, a way of life, not just a short term fix. Short term fixes rarely work, that is why so many people fail on their weight loss journey. You need to find a way of eating that fits into your daily life, one you can enjoy and most importantly one you can stick to. That is what I aimed to create with Optimum Nutrition and it has been a success, even if I do say so myself. Joanne and i have been eating this way for over 4 years, some of our clients have also been following it for years, even after they have lost the weight they wanted to, because now it is a just a way of life, one that is easy to maintain and doesn't leave you feeling deprived.
